Über Mich (und Graz)
I am finishing my senior year studying civil engineering in Graz, Austria. When I am not in class, you can find me hanging out at a coffee shop with friends, exploring the city and surrounding area on foot, or curled up with a book.
Graz is the capital of the state of Styria in southeastern Austria. The city was founded thousands of years ago where the Mur river opens into a broad valley. Beginning in the Middle Ages, a castle was built on a rocky hill in the center of the town. The "Schloßberg" was held by the ruling Habsburg family until the Napoleonic wars, when, after eight attacks by three thousand French troops against fewer than 900 Austrian defenders, it was dismantled as part of an agreement which protected Vienna. Graz's beautiful city center or "Altstadt" survived the world wars thanks to most of the city's industry, which drew most of the fire, being located on the opposite side of the river. Today Graz is the second largest city in Austria with about 290,000 residents.
